RESUMO

Curcuminoids and their complexes continue to attract attention in medicinal chemistry, but little attention has been given to their metabolic derivatives. Here, the first examples of (arene)Ru(II) complexes with curcuminoid metabolites, tetrahydrocurcumin (THcurcH), and tetrahydrobisdesmethoxycurcumin (THbdcurcH) were prepared and characterized. The neutral complexes [Ru(arene)(THcurc)Cl] and [Ru(arene)(THbdcurc)Cl] (arene = cymene, benzene, or hexamethylbenzene) were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry, and the crystal structures of the three complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Compared to curcuminoids, these metabolites lose their conjugated double bond system responsible for their planarity, showing unique closed conformation structures. Both closed and open conformations have been analyzed and rationalized by using density functional theory (DFT). The cytotoxicity of the complexes was evaluated in vitro against human ovarian carcinoma cells (A2780 and A2780cisR), human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7 and MCF-7CR), as well as against non-tumorigenic human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) and human breast (MCF-10A) cells and compared to the free ligands, cisplatin, and RAPTA-C. There is a correlation between cellular uptake and the cytotoxicity of the compounds, suggesting that cellular uptake and binding to nuclear DNA may be the major pathway for cytotoxicity. However, the levels of complex binding to DNA do not strictly correlate with the cytotoxic potency, indicating that other mechanisms are also involved. In addition, treatment of MCF-7 cells with [Ru(cym)(THcurc)Cl] showed a significant decrease in p62 protein levels, which is generally assumed as a noncisplatin-like mechanism of action involving autophagy. Hence, a cisplatin- and a noncisplatin-like concerted mechanism of action, involving both apoptosis and autophagy, is possible.

RESUMO

Molybdenum-catalysed deoxydehydration (DODH) of vicinal diols to alkenes has been investigated using density functional theory (DFT). In particular, the mechanism of DODH of diols using a phosphane as a reductant and a [Mo(O)2(QR)2] complex (QR = acylpyrazolonate ligand) as a catalyst has been studied. This reaction was the first description of a Mo-catalysed DODH reaction. Two alternative routes, A and B, have been analysed in which the commonly recognised key steps in DODH processes have been considered: (i) activation of the diol by condensation and formation of a Mo-diolate intermediate, (ii) oxygen atom transfer to phosphane with reduction to a Mo(IV) species, and (iii) alkene extrusion from the Mo-diolate with regeneration of the starting dioxidomolybdenum(VI) complex. In pathway A, the activation of the diol by the molybdenum complex occurred before the oxygen atom transfer, while in pathway B, the oxygen atom transfer of the dioxidomolybdenum complex to the phosphane occurred before the diol activation. In both routes, the final step was alkene extrusion from the molybdenum-diolate species. Pathway B, in which the reduction by phosphane preceded the diol condensation, is energetically preferred to pathway A.

RESUMO

A series of Ga(Qn)3 coordination compounds have been synthesized, where HQn is 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-RC(═O)-pyrazolo-5-one. The complexes have been characterized through analytical data, NMR and IR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. Cytotoxic activity against a panel of human cancer cell lines was determined by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, with interesting results in terms of both cell line selectivity and toxicity values compared with cisplatin. The mechanism of action was explored by spectrophotometric, fluorometric, chromatographic, immunometric, and cytofluorimetric assays, SPR biosensor binding studies, and cell-based experiments. Cell treatment with gallium(III) complexes promoted several cell death triggering signals (accumulation of p27, PCNA, PARP fragments, activation of the caspase cascade, and inhibition of the mevalonate pathway) and induced changes in cell redox homeostasis (decreased levels of GSH/GPX4 and NADP(H), increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE), mitochondrial damage, and increased activity of CPR and CcO), identifying ferroptosis as the mechanism responsible for cancer cell death.

RESUMO

Based on the isolobal analogy of ZnCp (Cp = η5-C5H5) and ZnR (R = alkyl or aryl group) fragments with hydrogen atom and fragment [Zn(CO)2] with a CH2 carbene, the following complexes [(ZnCp)2{µ-Zn(CO)2}], 1, [(ZnPh)2{µ-Zn(CO)2}], 2, [(ZnPh){µ-Zn(CO)2}(ZnCp)], 3, [(ZnCp)2{µ-Zn2(CO)4}], 4, [(ZnPh)2{µ-Zn2(CO)4}], 5, [(ZnPh){µ-Zn(CO)2}2(ZnCp)], 6, [Zn3(CO)6], 7 and [Zn5(CO)10], 8, were built. These polynuclear zinc compounds are isolobally related to simple hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, cyclopropane and cyclopentane). They have been studied by density functional theory (DFT) and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) to compare the nature and topology of the Zn-Zn bond with previous studies. There are bond critical points (BCPs) between each pair of adjacent Zn centers in complexes 1-8 with Zn-Zn distances within the range 2.37-2.50 Å. The nature of the Zn-Zn bond in these complexes can be described as polar rather than pure covalent bonds. Although in a subtle way, the presence of different ligands and zinc oxidation states introduces asymmetry and polarity in the Zn-Zn bond. In addition, the Zn-Zn bond is delocalized in nature in complex 7 whereas it can be described as a localized bond for the remaining zinc complexes here studied.

RESUMO

Hydrazones and their metal derivatives are very important compounds in medicinal chemistry due to their reported variety of biological activities, such as antibacterial, antifungal and anticancer action. Five hydrazone-pyrazolone ligands H2Ln (n = 1-5) were prepared and fully characterized and their tautomerism was investigated in the solid state and solution. Five zinc(II) complexes 1-5 of composition [Zn(HLn)2] (n = 1 and 2), [Zn(HLn)2(H2O)2] (n = 3 and 5) and [Zn(HL4)2]n were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, 1H, 19F, 13C, and 15N NMR spectroscopy, and ESI mass spectrometry. In addition, the structures of two ligands and three complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The ligands H2L2 and H2L4 exist both in the NH,NH tautomeric form. Complexes 1 and 2 are mononuclear compounds, while complex 4 is a one-dimensional coordination compound. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out on proligands, their anions and all zinc complexes, confirming the experimental results, supporting IR and NMR assignments and giving proofs of the mononuclear diaqua structure of complexes 3 and 5. The antibacterial activity of the free ligands and the Zn(II) complexes was established against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and a strong efficiency has been found for Zn(II) complexes, particularly for the polynuclear 4 and the mononuclear diaqua complex 5, the latter containing a ligand with aliphatic and fluorinated substituents able to compromise the permeability of and disrupt the bacterial cell membrane.

RESUMO

Two pyrazolone-based hydrazones H2L' [in general, H2L'; in detail, H2L1 = 5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-(2-phenyl-1-(2-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)hydrazineyl)ethyl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one, H2L2 = (Z)-5-methyl-2-phenyl-4-(2-phenyl-1-(2-(pyridin-2-yl)hydrazineyl)ethylidene)-2,4-dihydro-3H-pyrazol-3-one] were reacted with Zn(II) and Cu(II) acceptors affording the complexes [Zn(HL1)2(MeOH)2], [Cu(HL1)2], and [M(HL2)2] (M = Cu or Zn). X-ray and DFT studies showed the free proligands to exist in the N-H,N-H tautomeric form and that in [Zn(HL1)2(MeOH)2], zinc is six-coordinated by the N,O-chelated (HL1) ligand and other two oxygen atoms of coordinated methanol molecules, while [Cu(HL1)2] adopts a square planar geometry with the two (HL1) ligands in anti-conformation. Finally, the [M(HL2)2] complexes are octahedral with the two (HL2) ligands acting as κ-O,N,N-donors in planar conformation. Both the proligands and metal complexes were tested against the parasite Trypanosoma brucei and Balb3T3 cells. The Zn(II) complexes were found to be very powerful, more than the starting proligands, while maintaining a good safety level. In detail, H2L1 and its Zn(II) complex have high selective index (55 and >100, respectively) against T. brucei compared to the mammalian Balb/3T3 reference cells. These results encouraged the researchers to investigate the mechanism of action of these compounds that have no structural relations with the already known drugs used against T. brucei. Interestingly, the analysis of NTP and dNTP pools in T. brucei treated by H2L1 and its Zn(II) complex showed that the drugs had a strong impact on the CTP pools, making it likely that CTP synthetase is the targeted enzyme.

RESUMO

Complexes Na3[Ag(NHCR)2], 2a-e and 2b'-c', where NHCR is a N-heterocyclic carbene of the 2,2'-(1H-2λ3,3λ4-imidazole-1,3-diyl)dicarboxylate type, were prepared by treatment of compounds HLR, 1a-e and 1b'-c' (2-(1-(carboxyalkyl)-1H-imidazol-3-ium-3-yl)carboxylate), with silver oxide in the presence of aqueous sodium hydroxide. They were characterized by analytical, spectroscopic (infrared, IR, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, NMR, and circular dichroism) and X-ray methods (2a). In the solid state, the anionic part of complex 2a, [Ag(NHCH)2]3-, shows a linear disposition of Ccarbene-Ag-Ccarbene atoms and an eclipsed conformation of the two NHC ligands. The proposed bis(NHC) nature of the silver complexes was maintained in solution according to NMR and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The cytotoxic activity of compounds 2 was evaluated against four cancer cell lines and one non-cancerous cell line and several structure-activity correlations were found for these complexes. For instance, the activity decreased when the bulkiness of the R alkyl group in Na3[Ag(NHCR)2] increased. More interesting is the detected chirality-anticancer relationship, where complexes Na3[Ag{(S,S)-NHCR}2] (R = Me, 2b; iPr, 2c) showed better anticancer activity than those of their enantiomeric derivatives Na3[Ag{(R,R)-NHCR}2] (R = Me, 2b'; iPr, 2c').

RESUMO

Complexes {Ag[NHCMes,R]}n (R = H, 2a; Me, 2b and 2b'; iPr, 2c; iBu, 2d), were prepared by treatment of imidazolium precursor compounds [ImMes,R] (2-(3-mesityl-1H-imidazol-3-ium-1-yl)acetate, 1a, (S)-2-alkyl(3-mesityl-1H-imidazol-3-ium-1-yl)acetate, 1b-d, and (R)-2-methyl(3-mesityl-1H-imidazol-3-ium-1-yl)acetate, 1b', with Ag2O under appropriate conditions. They were characterised by analytical, spectroscopic (IR, 1H, and 13C NMR and polarimetry), and X-ray methods (2a). In the solid state, 2a is a one-dimensional coordination polymer, in which the silver(I) cation is bonded to the carbene ligand and to the carboxylate group of a symmetry-related Ag[NHCMes,H] moiety. The coordination environment of the silver centre is well described by the DFT study of the dimeric model {Ag[NHCMes,H]}2. The antimicrobial properties of these complexes were evaluated versus Gram-negative bacteria E. coli and P. aeruginosa. From the observed MIC and MBC values (minimal inhibitory concentration and minimal bactericidal concentration, respectively), complex 2b' showed the best antimicrobial properties (eutomer), which were significantly better than those of its enantiomeric derivative 2b (distomer). Additionally, analysis of MIC and MBC values of 2a-d reveal a clear structure-antimicrobial effect relationship. Antimicrobial activity decreases when the steric properties of the R alkyl group in {Ag[NHCMes,R]}n increase.

RESUMO

Complexes [Ag(LR)], 2 (LR = 2,2'-(imidazolium-1,3-diyl)di(2-alkylacetate)), were prepared by treatment of compounds HLR, 1, with Ag2O. They were characterised by analytical, spectroscopic (IR, 1H and 13C NMR and polarimetry) and X-ray methods (2c, 2c' and 2e). In the solid state, these compounds are novel one-dimensional or two-dimensional coordination polymers in which silver(I) cations are connected via the chiral [LR]- anion with unprecedented coordination modes. The antimicrobial properties of these complexes were evaluated. 2a and 2b' showed the best antimicrobial properties (minimal inhibitory concentrations and minimal bactericidal concentration) for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli pathogens. Eutomers 2b' and 2c' showed slightly better antimicrobial properties than their respective enantiomers 2b and 2c.

Abstract: Introduction: Osteoblastoma is a benign, aggressive and rare osteoblastic tumor. Its most common location is in later elements of the spine and sacrum. The cuboid presentation is exceptional. Case report: A 50-year-old male who began her condition in 2005, with pain and increased volume in the dorsolateral region of the middle foot. X-rays show bone grafting and a cuboid lesion, radiotransparent, heterogeneous, multilobed, with irregular edges that exceeds the lateral cortical. Angiotomography was performed where hypervascularized injury was observed; bone scan showed uptake of technetium 99, and MRI reported an injury with post-surgical, cystic and multilobed changes. Trans surgical biopsy was taken, increased atypia-free cellularity and few multinucleated giant cells were reported and Enneking 2 qualified. Treatment was initiated with resection of the tumor, cryotherapy, and placement of tricortical graft in the bone defect. He exhibited good post-surgical evolution. At three years of the surgical procedure, he`s without tumor and asymptomatic. Although osteoblastoma does not usually occur in cuboid, it should be taken into account as a differential diagnosis. Conclusion: Bone tumors, despite having common locations, can occur in rare areas and therefore the complete radiographic and histopathological clinical study in each patient is critical.

RESUMO

We report a new mononuclear molybdenum(iv) complex, MoOLBISLSQ, in which LSQ (2,4-di-tert-butyl o-semibenzoquinone ligand) has been prepared from the reaction of the o-iminosemibenzoquinone form of a tridentate non-innocent benzoxazole ligand, LBIS, and MoO2(acac)2. The complex was characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The crystal structure of MoOLBISLSQ revealed a distorted octahedral geometry around the metal centre, surrounded by one O and two N atoms of LBIS and two O atoms of LSQ. The effective magnetic moment (µ eff) of MoOLBISLSQ decreased from 2.36 to 0.2 µB in the temperature range of 290 to 2 K, indicating a singlet ground state caused by antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal and ligand centred unpaired electrons. Also, the latter led to the EPR silence of the complex. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies indicate both ligand and metal-centered redox processes. MoOLBISLSQ was applied as a catalyst for the oxidative cleavage of cyclohexene to adipic acid and selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfones with aqueous hydrogen peroxide.

RESUMO

Chiral Na[(S)-LR] (R = Me, 1a; iPr, 1b; CH2iPr, 1c, and (S)-secBu, 1d) and Na[(R)-LR] (R = Me, 1a') compounds were synthesised following standard procedures. New compounds 1d and 1a' were analytically and spectroscopically characterised. 1a and 1c were structurally identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods as homochiral 2D coordination polymers, {Na(H2O)[(S)-LMe]}n and {Na[(S)-LCH2iPr]}n, respectively. Both (S)-2alkyl,2-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)acetate anions displayed unprecedented coordination modes in these coordination polymers: µ3κ2OκO' for 1a and µ4κ2Oκ2O' for 1c. Enantiomeric species 1a', {Na(H2O)[(R)-LMe]}n, showed the same X-ray powder diffractogram (XRPD) as 1a, in agreement with a similar crystal structure. DFT calculations on the [LR]- anions confirmed their coordination capabilities as ditopic linkers. In fact, the reaction of Na[LR] with several metal salts yielded the following coordination polymers: {Ag[(S)-LMe]}n, 2a, {Ag[(R)-LMe]}n, 2a', {Cu[(S)-LR]2}n (R = Me, 3a; iPr, 3b), {Cu[(R)-LMe]}n, 3a', {Zn[(S)-LR]2}n (R = Me, 4a; iPr, 4b; (S)-secBu, 4d) and {Zn[(R)-LMe]2}n, 4a'. For the known compounds 3a and 4a, this procedure is a new synthetic route that avoided high temperature reaction conditions. New complexes 2, 3a', b, and 4a', b, d were characterised by elemental analysis, infrared and XRPD methods and complex 2a by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This complex is also a two-dimensional coordination polymer in which the [(S)-LMe]- anion acts as a µ4κN,κ2O,κ2O' bridging ligand. Compounds 1-4a' are the first examples of homochiral coordination polymers with imidazole-monocarboxylate ligands based on non-natural amino acids. Preliminary studies on the metal-catalysed preparation of chiral α-aminophosphonates were carried out but, unfortunately, no enantioselectivity was observed.

RESUMO

The first examples of stable metal complexes with coordinated ethylene and carbon dioxide ligands are reported. Reaction of tris(ethylene) complexes mer-M(C2H4)3(PNP) (M = Mo and W; PNP = 2,6-bis(diphenylphosphinomethyl)pyridine) with CO2 yields the corresponding, mixed cis-M(C2H4)2(CO2)(PNP) derivatives. X-ray studies reveal six-coordinate structures exhibiting η2-ethylene and κ2-C,O carbon dioxide coordination. Remarkably, the formation of the molybdenum CO2 adduct occurs also in the solid state at room temperature, under 4 bar of CO2, in a nearly quantitative manner.

RESUMO

Three pyrazolone-based hydrazone ligands HL' (HL' in general; in detail, HL1 = 2-((5-hydroxo-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1 H-pyrazol-4-yl)(phenyl)methylene)-1-(2,4-nitrophenyl)hydrazine, HL2 = 2-((5-hydroxo-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1 H-pyrazol-4-yl) (phenyl)methylene)-1-(4-nitrophenyl)hydrazine, and HL3 = 2-((5-hydroxo-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1 H-pyrazol-4-yl)(phenyl)methylene)-1-(pyridin-2-yl)hydrazine) have been prepared starting from 4-benzoyl-3-methyl-1-phenyl-1 H-pyrazol-5(4 H)-one and fully characterized in the solid state and solution, where the existing tautomeric forms were identified by taking advantage of natural abundance 1H-15N coupling in {1H-15N}-HSQC and {1H-15N}-HMBC NMR spectroscopy. Then, six half-sandwich arene-ruthenium(II) derivatives (arene = hexamethylbenzene and p-cymene) of composition [(arene)Ru(L')Cl] have been synthesized and fully characterized by IR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, and density functional theory calculations. The crystal structures of three complexes, together with the E configurational isomer (with respect to the C═N double bond) of the free proligand HL2 and the zwitterionic proligand HL3 were determined by X-ray analysis. The anionic ligands L1 and L2 were found bonded to ruthenium in the N,O-form, while L3 coordinates the metal in the N,N-form affording five-membered chelating rings. The cytotoxicity of the complexes was evaluated against human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7 and MCF-7CR), as well as against nontumorigenic human breast (MCF-10A) cells and compared to the free ligand and cisplatin.

Chiral alkyl aryl sulfoxides were obtained by molybdenum-catalyzed oxidation of alkyl aryl sulfides with hydrogen peroxide as oxidant in mild conditions with high yields and moderate enantioselectivities. The asymmetry is generated by the use of imidazolium-based dicarboxylic compounds, HLR. The in-situ-generated catalyst, a mixture of aqueous [Mo(O)(O2)2(H2O)n] with HLR as chirality inductors, in the presence of [PPh4]Br, was identified as the anionic binuclear complex [PPh4]{[Mo(O)(O2)2(H2O)]2(µ-LR)}, according to spectroscopic data and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. A nonclassical hydrogen bond between one C⁻H bond of the alkyl R group of coordinated (LR)− and one oxygen atom of the peroxido ligand was identified as the interaction responsible for the asymmetry in the process. Additionally, the step that governs the enantioselectivity was theoretically analyzed by locating the transition states of the oxido-transfer to PhMeS of model complexes [Mo(O)(O2)2(H2O)(κ¹-O-LR)]− (R = H, iPr). The ∆∆G≠ is ca. 0 kcal∙mol−1 for R = H, racemic sulfoxide, meanwhile for chiral species the ∆∆G≠ of ca. 2 kcal∙mol−1 favors the formation of (R)-sulfoxide.

RESUMO

Compounds [Bu4N]2[V8O16(oda)4⊂2Cl], 1, [Bu4N]2[V8O16(glut)4⊂2Cl], 2, and [Bu4N][V4O8(glut)2⊂F], 3, (oda = oxydiacetate, O(CH2COO)22-; glut = glutarate, CH2(CH2COO)22-) were obtained by a stepwise reaction of in situ prepared [Bu4N]VO3 with HCl (or HF for 3) and then with the dicarboxylic acid X(CH2COOH)2 (X = O and CH2), under appropriate reaction conditions. Multinuclear magnetic resonance (1H, 13C{1H}, 35Cl, 19F and 51V), electrochemical studies, X-ray structural determinations (single crystal and powder), thermogravimetric analyses (TGA) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were employed to characterise these polyoxovanadate complexes 1-3. They included encapsulated halide anions, two chloride ions in 1 and 2 and one fluoride ion in 3, where the shape and dimensions of the cage were governed by the halide size. The stabilizing template effect of the chloride ion towards the bowl-shaped [V4O8(OOCR)4] fragment (i.e. the half part of 1 and 2), containing a crown-shaped {V4O8} subunit, or that of the fluoride ion towards the planar {V4O8} moiety in 3, was definitively demonstrated by DFT calculations. The HOMO composition of 1 prompted us to study the possible oxidation of the two encapsulated chloride ions toward a chlorine molecule. The electrochemical behaviors of 1-3 were thus investigated. However, the chlorine molecule in the model [V8O16(oda)4⊂(Cl2)], 6c, was not capable to stabilise the polyoxovanadate cage [V8O16(oda)4], 4c, according to DFT calculations.

RESUMO

A series of neutral ruthenium(ii)-arene complexes, [(arene)Ru(QR)Cl] (arene = p-cymene or hexamethylbenzene), containing 4-acyl-5-pyrazolonate (QR) ligands with aromatic substituents in the acyl moiety (a phenyl in QPh and a 1-naphthyl in Qnaph) and related ionic complexes [(arene)Ru(QR)(PTA)][PF6] (PTA = 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) have been synthesized and characterized by IR, 1H, 13C and 31P NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and ESI mass spectrometry. The structures of five of these compounds were also determined by X-ray crystallography. DFT studies have been performed on all complexes and, in the case of two cationic [(arene)Ru(Qnaph)(PTA)][PF6], the existence of two conformers with a different relative orientation of the naphthyl group in the Qnaph ligand has been assessed, showing that they possess similar energies, in agreement with the experimentally observed NMR spectra in solution. The cytotoxicity of the 4-acyl-5-pyrazolonate proligands (HQR) and complexes was evaluated in vitro against human ovarian carcinoma cells (A2780 and A2780cisR) and non-tumorous human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells. In general, each complex is about equally cytotoxic to all three cell lines and the PTA derivatives with the naphthyl-modified QR ligands are the most active of the series.

RESUMO

Oxidoperoxido-molybdenum(vi) complexes containing acylpyrazolonate ligands were obtained by reaction of [Mo(O)(O)2(H2O)n] with the corresponding acylpyrazolone compounds HQR. Complexes Ph4P[Mo(O)(O2)2(QR)] (R = neopentyl, 1; perfluoroethyl, 2; hexyl, 3; phenyl, 4; naphthyl, 5; methyl, 6; cyclohexyl, 7; ethylcyclopentyl, 8) were obtained if the reaction was carried out with one equivalent of HQR in the presence of Ph4PCl. Alternatively, neutral complexes [Mo(O)(O2)(QR)2] (R = neopentyl, 9; hexyl, 10; cyclohexyl, 11) were formed when two equivalents of HQR were used in the reaction. These complexes were isolated in good yields as yellow or yellow-orange crystalline solids and were spectroscopically (IR, 1H, 13C{1H} and 31P{1H} NMR), theoretically (DFT) and structurally characterised (X-ray for 1, 2, 9 and 10). Compounds 1 and 9 were selected to investigate their catalytic behaviour in epoxidation of selected alkenes and oxidation of selected sulphides, while 10 and 11 were tested as catalyst precursors in the deoxygenation of selected epoxide substrates to alkenes, using PPh3 as the oxygen-acceptor. Complexes Ph4P[Mo(O)(O2)2(QR)] were shown to be poor catalyst precursors in oxidation reactions, while the activity of [Mo(O)(O2)(QR)2] species is good in all the studied reactions and comparable to related oxidoperoxido-molybdenum(vi) complexes. Complex [Mo(O)2(QC6)2], 12, was obtained by treatment of 10 with one equivalent of PPh3, demonstrating that the first step in the epoxide deoxygenation mechanism was the oxygen atom transfer toward the phosphane.

RESUMO

Different novel coordination polymers containing zinc, 1-4, and copper, 5-8, metals, connected via chiral imidazolium-based dicarboxylate ligands, [LR]-, were isolated by reaction between zinc acetate or copper acetate and enantiomerically pure HLR compounds. They were characterised and structurally identified by X-ray diffraction methods (single crystal and powder). These compounds are two-dimensional homochiral coordination polymers, [M(LR)2]n, in which the metal ions are coordinated by the two carboxylate groups of [LR]- anions in a general bridging monodentate µ2-κ1-O1,κ1-O3 fashion that afforded tetrahedral metal coordination environments for zinc, 1-4, and square planar for copper, 5-8, complexes. In all the compounds the 3D supramolecular architecture is constructed by non-covalent interactions between the hydrophobic parts (R groups) of the homochiral 2D coordination polymers and, in some cases, by weak C-HO non-classical hydrogen bonds that provided, in general, a dense crystal packing. DFT calculations on the [LR]- anions confirmed their conformational flexibility as ditopic linkers and this fact makes possible the formation of different coordination polymers for four-coordinated metal centers. Preliminary studies on the Zn-catalyzed synthesis of chiral α-aminophosphonates were carried out and, unfortunately, no enantioselectivity was observed in these reactions.
